my approach.

About me Based in Cardiff, Wales, I’m a native speaker of British English and an advanced speaker of French. I’ve also dabbled with Italian, Arabic and Hebrew because languages are a joy to explore and share with others. I love supporting others to achieve their language learning goals, discover linguistic curiosities and build connections between cultures. --------- Approach Language learning is hard and at times progress can feel slow. Like learning any skill, motivation and resilience are key. I’ve spent the last 10 years supporting language learners to stick with it and see the absolute joy of learning about another language and culture. I’m also analytical by nature so I see languages as a puzzle to solve, a code to unlock. Linguistics and grammar are therefore a personal passion. Whether it’s calming your nerves when speaking or getting to grips with grammar, I’d love to help. --------- Expertise Conversation - I can help build your confidence in speaking French and English, widen your active and passive vocabulary and improve your pronunciation. Phonics - I teach English and French phonics to improve spelling, reading and pronunciation, and build your wider linguistic understanding. We’ll have fun playing with sounds and learning about the physicality of language. Grammar - I share my love for grammar and linguistics because it’s fun (don’t let anyone tell you otherwise). I’ll help you to draw the links between language and other subjects, such as maths and music, which enables your brain to use transferable skills such as problem solving. Writing - I’ll help to hone your writing skills through different writing styles, from the functional to the creative, and I’ll help you to harness the power of different literary devices, such as idioms and metaphor. Translation - I love to teach translation theory alongside translation practice from any language into English and French. I can interweave this into broader language lessons or teach it as a standalone skill. Mentoring - I believe in the importance of motivation and resilience when learning a language. I’ll help support you to find your learning goals, build confidence and enjoy the journey. --------- Professional Experience Alongside my tutoring, I run my own business creating multilingual teaching resources, running workshops and clubs for kids and doing research into the language learning landscape in the UK. I have previously worked for the London School of Economics leading an initiative to promote social sciences, humanities and the arts in schools. I also worked at Cardiff University managing a project which trains university students to mentor secondary school learners in language learning and cultural understanding. I hold a Masters in Translation Studies and a Bachelors in French Studies from Cardiff University. I also have a Level 5 qualification in Coaching and Mentoring. --------- Interests When I’m not chatting about language, I enjoy gardening and nature, often growing veggies and flowers for my family and neighbours. You’ll find my two elderly rabbits sitting with me in my office while I work. I also volunteer with my local church helping with strategy and communications as well as supporting asylum seekers and refugees in the city. --------- Practical Things I teach online or in-person on Monday-Thursdays until 7pm and on Saturdays till 5pm. I love working with both adults and children as everyone brings something unique and interesting. I’m happy to have a free chat for the first lesson to get to know each other and talk about goals and approaches.
